Economists have another definition beyond the definition of poverty. That is the percentage of people in the country who consider themselves poor. A 2009 survey led by economist SR Osmani found that 32.3% of people in Bangladesh consider themselves poor. The number is much higher than the poverty rate in Bangladesh.
The foundation for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh is not strong. The base is fragile. Those who have been freed from poverty in Bangladesh somehow cross the poverty line in a favorable economic environment. If the enabling environment changes, a large population may fall below the poverty line.
Kovid-19 has created fragility in the economic success of Bangladesh. Not only in public health, but also in the broader economic field of Bangladesh. Employment has decreased, unemployment has increased, many small entrepreneurs have died. The question is, will this damage go away on its own if the incidence of covid is reduced? Optimistic Bangladeshi economists claim that if Kovid leaves, the Bangladeshi economy will return to normal. Rapid growth will start again. We will continue to advance on the path we have traveled to eradicate poverty. They call that growth the growth of the English letter ‘V’. The line of the letter V descends. After descending to the lowest point, the steep line ascends again.
Not only the government of Bangladesh, but also the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is optimistic about the growth of Bangladesh. According to the IMF projection, this time growth will be lower than the previous year. However, growth will be higher than that of India. The good news is that growth is higher than in India, but not enough. Renowned economist Amartya Sen and his colleague Jean Dreze fear that Covid destruction will not be possible with the ‘uncertain glory’ or ‘uncertain glory’ of the rapidly growing East India-Covid. So the question arises: will the solution to the economic problems of post-Kovid Bangladesh be easy, or will new obstacles have to be overcome?
