The accident took place in Bittipara on the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway on Tuesday, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Atiqul Islam.
The deceased were identified as Mofiz Uddin, 38, son of Abdus Sattar Hawlader from Laxmipasha village in Lohagarh upazila de Narail, Nadia Arbi, 30, Mofiz’s wife, son Ifat Hawlader, 15, brother-in-law of Mofiz Alim Hossain , 28, and ambulance driver Tipu Sultan, 30.
The injured Insan Ali is being treated at Kushtia General Hospital. He is the younger brother-in-law of the late Mofiz Uddin.
ASP Atiqul Islam said that an ambulance heading from Kushtia to Jessore collided head-on with a BADC cargo truck coming from the opposite direction when it reached Bittipara Laxmipur-Niyatmore around 3:30 pm.
He said police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital. Among the dead were four men and one woman.
He said a seriously injured person was being treated at the Kushtia General Hospital.
The rescue team of the Kushtia Fire Service and the police jointly carried out the rescue operation.
Ali Sajjad, a senior officer at the Kushtia Fire Service Station, said the victims were initially thought to be returning to Laxmipasha’s home in Lohagarh, Narail, from Pabna Mental Hospital.
