Haji Selim, a parliamentarian from the Dhaka-6 constituency, who had been in hiding for more than a week after his son Irfan was arrested for beating a naval officer, was seen on Mill Jail Murder Day.
On Tuesday (November 3) morning, Haji Selim was seen visiting the portraits of the Interior Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal Bangabandhu, and four national leaders at the former Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road.
On the night of October 25, in Dhanmondi, some people got out of Haji Selim’s car and beat a naval officer. Haji Selim’s son Irfan Selim, the 30th District Councilor of the Dhaka South City Corporation, was in the car at the time.
Irfan Selim is now in DB remand with some cases. The mobile court also sentenced him to one and a half years in prison for illegally drinking and using Wakitki.
Irfan had to lose the position of councilor upon being convicted. The ACC has announced the start of an investigation into the collection of ‘illegal assets’ from the MP’s family.
Haji Selim has been in hiding since the incident. At around 9:15 am Tuesday, he got into a white van and drove to the old Nazimuddin Road jail to attend the Murder Day in Jail celebrations. The eldest son, Solomon Selim, was with him at the time.
Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal arrived at the scene around 10:15 pm He got out of the car and stopped near the old prison warehouse. Also present at the minister’s request were Humayun Kabir, secretary general of the metropolitan south of Dhaka, and former MP Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin.
Haji Selim also greeted the Minister of the Interior and stood by his side. Afterwards, everyone paid tribute to the portrait of Bangabandhu and four national leaders with flowers.
However, there was no conversation between the Minister of the Interior and Haji Selim at the time. When the minister left the jail around 10:15 am, Haji Selim also left around 10:30 am.
