The imam of an Egyptian mosque has been arrested for criticizing the French president for his derogatory comments. The police arrested the imam, identified as “Ahmad Hammam”, on the orders of the country’s Waqf Ministry.
Ahmad Hammam runs a mosque in the province of Alexandria, in northern Egypt. He criticized the insulting comments of French President Emmanuel Macron in a prayer sermon on Friday. Upon receiving this news, the Egyptian police arrested Imam Hammam on instructions from the Waqf Ministry and handed him over to the judiciary.
According to the Egyptian media, Hammam has been accused of inciting people to violence and terrorism.
Egyptian Waqf Minister Mohammed Mokhtar Juma said in a statement that he had ordered the removal of Ahmad Hammam and that steps would be taken to prevent Hammam from heading more mosques.
An imam from the mosque has been detained in Egypt as clerics and religious leaders from around the world continue to warn the public about the French president’s insulting comments out of a sense of religious responsibility.
In France, a school teacher recently showed a satirical cartoon of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the name of freedom of expression. The teacher was later killed by a man named Abdullakh Anzorov. Anzorov was shot and killed by the police shortly after the schoolmaster’s death. The French president later called the cartoon’s statement “freedom of expression.” He said those cartoons would continue to be published in France.
