Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has given a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to make three demands in protest at the exhibition of controversial cartoons published in the French satirical magazine Shirley Ebdo. The demands are to break diplomatic relations with France, expel the ambassador and close the embassy. He also called for a boycott of all French products. Hefazat Secretary General Allama Hafez Junaid Babungari made the announcement at a protest rally Monday afternoon against the siege of the French embassy.
At 12:15 pm, the procession of the siege of the French Embassy started from the Paltan turn of the capital. Hefazat’s leader, Allama Junaid Babungari, and Dhaka’s metropolitan, Hefazat Amir Maulana Nur Hossain Qasemi, led the procession. Police barricaded the procession off Bailey Road around 1:15 pm. Later, the Hefazat leaders stood there and gave short speeches. Nur Hossain Kasemi finished the siege procession through munajat. He also said that the next program will be announced in the party’s decision.
Earlier, after Fajr prayers in the Baitul Mukarram area of the National Mosque, Qawmi Madrasa scholars, students and worshipers from different parts of the country began to gather at 6 am. The road from Vijayanagar, Press Club to Paltan, Gulistan was closed. A large number of policemen were deployed in the vicinity. In his speech, Allama Noor Hossain Qasemi, president of the Dhaka Metropolitan Custody, called for the immediate closure of the French Embassy in Bangladesh, the approval of a condemnation motion in Parliament and the boycott of French products.
Hefazat leader Ameer from the Khilafah movement, Maulana Shah Ataullah Ibn Hafezi Huzur, Maulana Junaid Al Habib, Maulana Nurul Islam, Maulana Abdullah Mohammad Hasan, Maulana Mahfuzul Haq, Maulana Abdur Rab Yusuf, also spoke at the rally. Ahmad Abdul Quader, Maulana Habibullah Miyaji, Maulana Mujibur Rahman Hamidi, Maulana Hasan Jamil and others.
Traffic jam: Police closed and diverted possible roads in anticipation of the huge protest procession. That is why all the vehicles got stuck on the road before the start of the protest procession. Due to the traffic jam, most of the people can be seen walking towards their destination.
