Union Buraburi declared child marriage free in Ulipur, Kurigram. However, the president of this union, Abu Taleb Sarkar, has been accused of marrying a student under the ninth grade.
The Upazila district and administration officially declared child marriage free for the Buraburi Union last year. The president of the UP himself, 47, got married last Sunday night. The locals said it was the president’s third marriage.
Baksiganj High School principal Meheruzzaman said the student was studying in the ninth grade of his school’s humanities department.
When asked, UP President Abu Taleb Sarkar admitted the marriage and said: “My newly married wife is 20 years old according to her primary school final exam certificate.” He is still a student at the school as he has failed more than once in different classes at the school.
The president claimed that opponents were spreading propaganda against him.
Ulipur Upazila (Lands) Deputy Commissioner and Upazila Nirbahi Acting Officer Ashraful Alam Russell said they were not aware of the matter. If someone complains in writing about this, action will be taken.
