The High Court has asked the directors of three hospitals in the capital for an explanation about the death of two newborns without treatment. The court asked the directors of Mugda Islamic Hospital, Agargaon Children’s Hospital and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to explain the matter within the next 28 hours.

A two-judge bench made up of Judge Nazrul Islam Talukder and Judge Ahmed Sohail approved the order on Monday.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state in court. He said he gave birth to twins in a GNC autorickshaw this morning while taking Saira Khatun, wife of Supreme Court clerk Abul Kalam, to the hospital. The mother and two newborns were later admitted to the Mugda Islamia Hospital. From that hospital they were sent to the Dhaka Children’s Hospital. The children’s hospital did not admit the mother or the two newborns. After that, the newborn babies were taken to Bangabandhu Medical University, but they were not admitted there. Eventually, the twins died in the facilities of Bangabandhu Medical University Hospital.

His father Abul Kalam went to the High Court with the bodies of the two newborns to seek justice. The Superior Court took cognizance of the matter and issued the order. At the same time, the High Court has issued a rule on why inaction not to treat two newborns will not be declared illegal.
