Lalmonirhat: Police arrested five more people, including 61-year-old Burimari mosque keeper Jobed Ali, in three cases accused of killing Shahidunnabi Jewel and burning her body in a massive beating in Burimari in Lalmonirhat. A total of 10 people were arrested.

Patgram Police Officer-in-Charge (CO) Sumant Kumar Mohant confirmed the arrest of the mosque attendant to banglanews on Monday (November 2) morning.

Police took five people to court on Sunday (November 1) for the first time since the incident. Then on Monday, 5 more people arrested were shown. Police arrested a total of 10 people in three cases brought up in the incident. However, the investigating officer of the case, Inspector Mahmudunnabi of the District Detective Department (DB), requested preventive detention for 5 days in the murder case of 5 people arrested in the first phase.
The court set Monday for the hearing of the request for preventive detention and ordered to send the arrested persons to jail. It is known that 5 people, including the servant arrested in the second phase, may be brought to court on Monday (November 2) in the afternoon.

The detainees are Ashraful Alam (22) and Bayezid (24), son of Ismail Hossain from the area, Rafiq (20), son of Yusuf Ali alias Oli Hossain, Masum Ali (35), son of Abul Hashem and Shafiqul Islam (25 ), son of Samchizul Haque. The investigating officer wanted a five-day pretrial detention for these five defendants.

Saiful Islam, Shahidunnabi Jewel’s cousin, filed a case on Saturday (October 31) for spreading rumors of insulting the Koran. In the same incident, Patgram (SI) Police Station Deputy Inspector Shahjahan Ali brought a case against the police and another case was brought against Burimari UP President Abu Saeed Newaz Nishat for vandalizing the Parishad Union. Police from the District Detective Division (DB) have been tasked with investigating the three most disputed cases. In these three cases, the police arrested 10 people, including the mosque’s servant, in two phases.

Earlier on Thursday (October 29) afternoon, the attack took place at the Burmemari Bazar Central Jame mosque in Patgram Upazila.

The deceased was identified as Shahidunnabi Jewel, son of Abdul Wazed Miah from the Shalban Mistripara area of ​​Rangpur. He is a former librarian at Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College and alumnus of Dhaka University. Being fired last year left him mentally unbalanced.

Police and locals said Shahidunnabi Jewel came to visit Burimari on Thursday afternoon with a colleague named Abdar from Sultan Yobai. In the afternoon, they performed the Asr prayers at the Burimari Central Jame Mosque.

After reading the Quran that Sharif kept at the mosque’s sunset to recite at the end of prayers, some books of the Quran and Hadith inadvertently fell at his feet. At this moment, Jewel also kissed. Muazzin had a fight with him over the matter. People in the area rushed to the scene and detained Jewel and Sultan Yobayer in a room in the Union Parishad building next door. Upon receiving the news, Patgram Upazila, president of UNO, OC attended the Burimari Union Parishad.

As rumors spread through the market and surrounding villages at night, two young men were arrested for insulting the Quran. At that moment, the agitated mob smashed the door and window of the Union Parishad building, snatched Jewel from the administration and beat him to death. Later, the locals dragged the body to the Patgram-Burimari road and reduced it to ashes. At that moment, the agitated crowd set the road on fire and blocked it.

Patgram and Hatibandha police, the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and members of the fire service tried to control the situation overnight, but failed. At that time, 10 policemen, including Patgram OC Sumant Kumar Mohant Police Station, were injured in the attack. Police fired 18 rounds to disperse the crowd.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar and Police Superintendent (SP) Abida Sultana rushed to the scene around 10:30 pm and controlled the situation. Police have rescued Sultan Yobayer, a companion of the murdered Jewel, in critical condition and admitted him to hospital.

Jewel’s cousin Saiful Alam, Patgram SI Police Station Shahjahan Ali and Burimari UP President Abu Saeed Newaz Nishat have filed three separate cases. Police have arrested 10 people so far after identifying the defendants after watching video of the incident. All the detainees are residents of the Burimari area.

On Sunday (November 1), Al Mahmoud Fouzul Kabir, director of the Complaints and Investigation Team of the National Human Rights Commission, said that there had been no incidents of Quran desecration of the mosque while investigating the scene. It has been claimed that this is just a rumor.
