Earlier on Thursday (October 29) afternoon, the attack took place at the Burmemari Bazar Central Jame mosque in Patgram Upazila. The deceased was identified as Shahidunnabi Jewel, son of Abdul Wazed Miah of Shalban Mistripara in Rangpur. He is a former librarian at Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College and alumnus of Dhaka University. He lost some of his mental balance due to being fired last year.

Police and locals said Shahidunnabi Jewel came to visit Burimari on Thursday afternoon with a man named Abdar from Sultan Yobai. In the afternoon, they performed the Asr prayers at the Burimari Central Jame Mosque.

When he came down to the Qur’an Sharif kept in the mosque’s sunset to recite it at the end of prayers, some books of the Qur’an and Hadith inadvertently fell at his feet. At that moment, Jewel took the books of the Qur’an and the Hadith and kissed them. Muazzin had a fight with him over the matter. People in the area rushed to the scene and detained Jewel and Sultan Yobayer in a room in the Union Parishad building next door. Upon receiving the news, Patgram Upazila, president of UNO, OC went to Burimari Union Parishad.

At night, rumors spread throughout the market and the surrounding towns that two young men had been arrested for blasphemy. Excited at this moment, the agitated people smashed the doors and windows of the Union Parishad (UP) building, snatched Jewel from the administration and beat him to death. Later, the locals dragged the body to the Patgram-Burimari road and reduced it to ashes. At that moment, the agitated crowd set the road on fire and blocked it.

Patgram and Hatibandha police, the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and members of the fire service tried to control the situation overnight, but failed. Ten policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Patgram Police Station, Sumant Kumar Mohant, were injured when bricks and stones thrown by the mob hit them. Police fired 18 rounds to disperse the crowd.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar and Police Superintendent (SP) Abida Sultana rushed to the scene with additional police officers around 10:30 pm and controlled the situation. Police have rescued Sultan Yobayer, a companion of the murdered Jewel, in critical condition and admitted him to hospital.

Jewel’s cousin Saiful Alam, Patgram (SI) Police Station Deputy Inspector Shahjahan Ali and Burimari UP President Abu Saeed Newaz Nishat have filed three separate cases.
