On July 22, 2016, the police recovered Payel’s body under the Bhaterchar Bridge in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila. The night before, Payal had left Chittagong for Dhaka on a Hanif Enterprise bus with his friend. On July 24, Pawel’s uncle, Golam Sorwardi, filed a case with the Biplob Gazaria Police Station. On October 3, Gazaria Police Inspector Mamun Al Rashid, the investigating officer in the case, filed a charge sheet against the bus driver, his assistant and supervisor. The case was then sent first to the Chittagong Speedy Court of First Instance and then to the Dhaka Speedy Court of First Instance.

The defendants said in their statement that they got off the bus when the vehicle got stuck in traffic in the Gazaria area. When the bus started moving, he ran, knocked on the door, and lost consciousness. Blood was coming out of his nose and mouth. To avoid trouble, the driver and supervisor did not take him to the hospital, but instead dropped him from the Bhaterchar bridge into the lower canal and moved to Dhaka.

However, Pawel’s relatives complained that his face had been smashed before he was thrown off the bridge. They can do this to hide their identities. Saidur Rahman Payel’s house is in the Halishahar residential area CDA in Chittagong. He went to Chittagong with the news that he was a nephew.
