Five policemen from Rajshahi’s Godagari Police Station have been charged with murdering a man for heroin embezzlement. The defendant in the murder case of Rafiqul Islam, 32, from Poladanga village in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj near Godagari, 29-year-old Isahaq Ali alias Isa, made the accusation in a court statement.
Last Friday, Isa testified under Section 164 in the court of Rajshahi’s highest judicial magistrate, Ujjwal Mahmud. He is the son of Rezaul Islam from Madarpur Village in Godagari Township. He is accused of being involved in drug trafficking.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, son of Fazlur Rahman from Poladanga village. His body was recovered from Dewanpara Padma Char in Godagari on March 22. After recovering the body, the police filed an unnatural death case claiming that he had died.
When asked about defendant Isa’s statement claiming that Rafiqul was killed by the police, Rajshahi Police Superintendent (SP) ABM Masud Hossain told Kaler Kanth: “If someone mentions the name of the police in the statement “You cannot say that the police are involved. Again, the police are not involved, that cannot be emphasized either. The next step will be taken after looking at the statement documents.
According to judicial sources, the Deputy Inspector (SI) of the Godagari Mizanur Rahman Police Station, Abdul Mannan, Rezaul Islam, Officer Shahadat Hossain and Shafiqul Islam were named in the confessional statement of the accused Isaac Ali Isa.
SI Mizanur Rahman and Constable Shafiqul are still working there. A couple of months ago, SI Mannan, Rezaul and Constable Shahadat were moved to another location. Among them, Rezaul is at the Ishwardi Police Station in Pabna. The whereabouts of the other two are unknown.
Rumisa Khatun, 28, the wife of the late Rafiqul Islam, is known to have filed a murder case against Shariful Islam, 32, son of Abdul Malek of Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila and Jamal Uddin, 32, son of Azad Ali of the same area at the Godagari police station on June 18.
According to judicial sources, on the night of March 21, five accused police officers from the Godagari police station carried out a drug rescue operation in Dewanpara Padma Char without informing the higher authorities or registering any general diary (GD) at the police station. . The police team arrested Jamal Uddin from there with 100 grams of heroin. Upon returning to the police station that night, the police arrested Jamal and filed a case under the Narcotics Act that showed Rafiqul as a fugitive. The body of Rafiqul Islam was found in the char on the morning of March 22. The police then sent his body to the morgue of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. He filed an unnatural death lawsuit claiming he died in the fire.
According to the court and related sources, Inspector (investigation) Nityapad Das from the Godagari Police Station was assigned the responsibility of investigating the case of Jamal’s arrest. He detained the defendant for two days through court. Jamal later testified in court under section 164. In his statement, Jamal said that he and Rafiqul were dealing heroin in exchange for money. On the night of March 21, Rafiqul was killed when two of them were crossing the Padma Char with heroin. And he was caught by the police.
The court is known to have ordered the case of Rafiqul’s murder to be turned over to the Police Investigation Office (PBI) on June 23. On July 6, the Rajshahi PBI obtained the case documents from the police station. YES Jamal Uddin is investigating the case. Isaac Ali Isa, Faridul Islam and Mahabub Ali from Madarpur village in Godagari were arrested on October 27. At one stage in his interrogation, Isa told everything about Rafiqul’s murder. He made a confessional statement in court last Friday.
According to judicial sources, Isa said in his statement that he paid 200,000 rupees to a man named Kashem in Murshidabad, India, for shipping 100 grams of heroin a few days before the incident. Kashem first sent him fake heroin. Kashem was then promised that he would send him real heroin if he wanted a refund. Isa said Kashem agreed when he asked for another 400 grams of heroin. Since the dispatch date was correct, he contacted the Godagari police to mislead Kashem. Isa has claimed that he has an agreement with the police that if he confiscates the heroin, he will have to pay two lakhs of rupees. He will arrest two carriers with fake heroin. The police will take all the heroin.
According to Isa’s statement, the five policemen from the Godagari police station attended the operation on the night of March 21 as scheduled. They caught Rafiqul and Jamal. They beat Rafiqul to get heroin out of him. After a while, Rafiqul fell onto the sand. Isa told the court that he fled the scene after Rafiqul was confirmed dead. Later, he learned that Rafiqul had died in Bajpat.
An official from Rajshahi PBI told Kaler Kanth that the autopsy report indicated that Rafiqul had died from serious injuries.
Regarding the incident, the Godagari Police Station OC Khairul Islam said that Rafiqul’s body was found in the Padma Char a few days after joining Godagari. A few days later, the case went to PBI. He still did not know if any police officers were involved in the killings.
