France has been embroiled in controversy since the murder of a history teacher by a Muslim extremist over a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad. In this incident, Macron announced that he would continue to publish cartoons of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). A Tunisian man stabbed to death three people, including a woman, at a church in the northern city of Nice on Thursday. Macron called the incident an Islamist terrorist attack.
The priest was shot twice on Saturday near a church in the city of Lyon. Police sources told Reuters that he was being treated in critical condition. Witnesses said the church belonged to Greek Orthodox. Police cordoned off the scene after the attack.
Earlier, the French Interior Minister warned that more terrorist attacks could occur in France. President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the deployment of thousands of troops to protect important places such as places of worship and schools.
