The Minister of Liberation War Affairs, AKM Mozammel Haque, has said that Indira Gandhi’s contribution to the war of independence is undeniable. It has shaped public opinion in the world for this country. Although he played a key role in our independence, we don’t respect him that way. He said so at a Indira Gandhi memorial meeting organized by the Conscious Citizens Committee of Bangladesh at the National Press Club on Saturday.
The minister said that when Indira Gandhi spoke for independence, some people in India created obstacles. He told them: I have taken a stand for justice and people. Also, a group of journalists in the United States questioned him as an instigator of the war in Pakistan. Indira responded: “My position is the liberation of the town”. I am for the people.
AQM Mozammel Haque said that during the liberation war, he presented the just rights of Bangladesh to the world. He helped the freedom fighters with shelter, training and weapons. Without this cooperation, the liberation war would have dragged on.
He said that during the liberation war, he opened all the borders of India to us, provided shelter, food aid to a crore of people, trained 2 lakh people and helped us. But even after so many contributions, we couldn’t respect Indira Gandhi in that way, we couldn’t do anything in her honor.
