Jewel’s brother-in-law, Milon Haque Talukder, said Jewel was working in the library department of Rangpur Cantt Public University and School until September 12, 2019. A relative said he was sent on mandatory retirement from the institution. He has a son and a daughter.

The caretaker of the mosque, Jobed Ali, said that the mob began to beat a man in front of the mosque after Asr’s prayers, accusing him of insulting the Quran. From there the incident began.

The district administration formed a three-member investigative committee on Friday headed by Additional District Magistrate TMA Momin.

Some locals, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said worshipers inside and outside the mosque attacked Jewel. When the news spread outside, people from Burimari Bazar started running towards the mosque. Hafizul Islam, a member of the Burimari Union Parishad, rescued the two and brought them to the Union Parishad. Then hundreds of people gathered at the union council to protest.

Upon receiving the news, Patgram Officer Upazila Nirbahi, Upazila Parishad President, Patgram OC Police Station and Burimari Union Parishad President rushed to the scene.

Some locals said their attempts to calm the “protesters” had failed. The enraged crowd tore down the walls, bars, and doors of the Union Parishad building and took Jewel out, beating him. They then tied him to a rope and dragged him, poured gasoline near the Parishad Union and set him on fire.

According to locals, the CO from Patgram Police Station fled through the roof of the Union Parishad with the wounded Sultan Jobayer Abbas.

At that moment, the agitated people tore apart the Parishad Union and set it on fire. They set fire to a motorcycle.

Hafizul Islam, a member of Burimari Union Parishad District No. 1, said that he had brought the two men to Union Parishad and kept them under lock and key to protect them from agitated people and informed the UN, the Upazila police president and to the president of the Parishad Union. But the end was not saved.

Burimari Union Parishad President Abu Saeed Newaz Nishat said: “We are shocked and saddened by such an incident. The criminals broke the walls and the grill of the town hall, took one out and beat him to death. They wreaked havoc on the Parishad Union and set it on fire. We have decided to take legal action after watching the video of the council. ”

And a friend of Jewel’s, Saju, told bdnews24.com that Jewel was undergoing treatment for mental illness at Rafiqul Islam, an assistant professor at the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
