The priest was seriously injured in Saturday’s attack and the attacker fled, police sources and eyewitnesses told Reuters.

A police source told Reuters the attacker shot the priest twice as he approached the church around 4 pm local time, and that he was being treated at the scene for “life-threatening injuries.”

Witnesses said the church was Greek Orthodox. Police cordoned off the area shortly after the attack.

Just two days ago, on Thursday, another man shouted “Allahu Akbar” at a church in the French city of Nice, beheaded a woman and killed two others, according to media reports.

Two weeks ago, another 18-year-old beheaded a local school teacher in the Paris suburbs. The teacher is believed to have been angry when he was shown a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in class.

Some French ministers have warned that such incidents could happen again. The country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, has deployed thousands of troops to secure places like places of worship and schools. Another attack occurred near a church.
