The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Greece and Turkey has risen to 22

At least 22 people died in a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Greece and Turkey. Twenty of the dead were from Turkey.

Turkey’s Izmir province, on the Aegean coast, was hit the hardest on Friday (October 30). Greece hit the Samos region.

Turkey’s disaster management authority says 20 bodies have been recovered so far. The dead are all from the coastal region. At least 6 people were injured.

Many houses have collapsed. Many cars were crushed. Coastal areas have been flooded. It is speculated that there may be more bodies under the rubble.

Turkey says rescue operations are underway on 16 destroyed buildings. So far, 60 people have been rescued alive. So far, 198 aftershocks have been felt. Of these, 23 levels were above 4 on the Richter scale.

Videos posted on social media show various pieces of furniture being washed away. You can even see cars floating.

On the other hand, at least 45,000 people live on the island of Samos in Greece. They have been advised to stay away from the sea coast.

At least 20 buildings were damaged in the earthquake, CNN reported, citing the mayor of Izmir.

The United States Geological Survey (UGS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Turkish province of Izmir. It is also felt in Athens, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey.

Following the earthquake, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was ready if Greece needed help.

Turkey is one of the countries most prone to earthquakes. In August 1999, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 16,000 people in the city of Izmit. The 2011 earthquake killed at least 500 people in the city of Van.
