Police and locals said Shahidunnabi Jewel came to visit Burimari on Thursday afternoon with a colleague named Abdar from Sultan Yobai. In the afternoon, they performed the Asr prayers at the Burimari Central Jame Mosque.

When he came down to the Qur’an Sharif kept in the mosque’s sunset to recite it at the end of the prayers, some books of the Qur’an and Hadith inadvertently fell on his feet. People in the area rushed to the scene and detained Jewel and Sultan Yobayer in a room in the Union Parishad building next door. In the evening, rumors spread throughout the market and in the neighboring village that two young men had been arrested for insulting the Quran. At that moment, the agitated mob smashed the door and window of the Union Parishad building, snatched Jewel from the administration and beat him to death. Later, the body was washed up on the Patgram-Burimari highway and burned to the ground. At that moment, the agitated crowd set the road on fire and blocked it.

Patgram and Hatibandha police, the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and members of the fire service tried to control the situation overnight, but failed. At that time, 10 policemen, including Patgram OC Sumant Kumar Mohant Police Station, were injured in the attack. Police fired 18 rounds to disperse the crowd.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar and Police Superintendent (SP) Abida Sultana rushed to the scene with additional police officers around 10:30 pm and controlled the situation. The police have rescued Sultan Yobayer, a partner of the murdered Jewel, in critical condition and admitted him to hospital. Additional police officers were deployed to the scene and members of the RAB continued to patrol.

Patgram Police Station OC Sumant Kumar Mohant told reporters that preparations were under way to bring three separate cases against the victim’s family, assault on police and Parishad Union vandalism. No arrests have been made so far. Police are working to identify the culprits.
