In Patgram, Lalmonirhat, a man was beaten to death for blasphemy and then his body was burned. Many have expressed their frustration at such atrocities through social media.
Touhidunnabi, the deceased’s brother, said that on Thursday morning, the day of the incident, his brother went to a friend’s house on a motorcycle. Although they left, no one could say when they went to Patgram.
Later in the evening, he did not return home and did not answer his mobile phone. When the news was taken from that friend, he told him about the violent situation at Patgram.
Meanwhile, after watching the video of the massive beating that went viral on social media, Touhidunnabi was convinced that the victim was none other than his own brother Jewel.
Whose full name is Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidun Nabi Jewel. He was the fourth of five siblings and is said to be in his early fifties.
Meanwhile, the wife of the murdered martyr Nabi Jewel and her two children are mentally disturbed by the sudden death of her husband. Her youngest son is said to be a sixth-class student.
Jewel was born and raised in the Rangpur district. He passed Rangpur District School High School and Carmichael College High School, Rangpur. He then enrolled in the Library and Information Sciences of Dhaka University. There he completed his honors and masters degrees.
After graduating, he joined Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College as a professor of library science. He was basically in charge of the library there. He has done that job for 24 consecutive years.
After retiring last year, Jewel was trying to start her own business. Otherwise, his brother said he was trying to get into a new job.
But the coronavirus was unable to move in either direction due to the situation. Touhidunnabi said that Jewel was a bit frustrated in such a situation. However, he also confirmed that his mental depression was not serious.
Jewel was known to the locals as a simple, direct, friendly, and pious man in his personal life. So no one seems to be able to accept his brutal death as normal.
In this regard, Touhidunnabi said: “Jewel was a simple, white-minded man in a word. Naturally and a bit fickle. But lately, she’s been going through a lot of emotional turmoil. I went out in the mornings, I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t pick up the phone, I’ve been sitting at home for a long time, there’s no specific job. Maybe that’s why there was stress. But that is not serious. I used to pray five times like this. ‘
Touhidunnabi said that Jewel used to read various books in addition to the scriptures. He also said that he had a good command of English.
According to statistics, between 2011 and 2016, some 700 people were killed in massive beatings in Bangladesh, some of them on suspicion of kidnapping or robbery, and others on suspicion of beating a minor to death.
However, this is the first time that a corpse has been publicly burned after being beaten to death.
The psychiatrist Freud said that primitive animal instincts in humans want to come out whenever they get a chance.
The reaction of thousands of people in Lalmonir is like the manifestation of that animal instinct, says the expert.
They believe that such atrocities around rumors can be suppressed by establishing the rule of law and spreading social awareness. Source: BBC Bangla
