Police have questioned several locals in connection with the beating to death of a man in Patgram upazila of Lalgramirhat in Bangladesh. Lalmonirhat District Police Superintendent Abida Sultana said on Friday that the investigation was trying to find out the exact cause of the incident.
Although some locals have accused the victim of hurting religious feelings. After inspecting the place yesterday, the police superintendent said they initially knew that the two, including the deceased, had gone to a mosque in the Burimari area of Patgram to offer Asr prayers yesterday. After the prayers, rumors spread that he had insulted the place where the Quran was kept. So hundreds of people gathered and beat the man to death, and after the massacre, the body was set on fire.
However, he said, local people are now giving various information about the incident to the police. Police have now started investigating the incident.
Videos of beatings and burning of bodies have gone viral on social media. However, the police have yet to identify anyone involved in the incident.
Police officers said they were trying to identify those involved by looking at video footage captured at the scene. A large number of law enforcement officers have been deployed to the area and the situation is calm at the moment, said Police Superintendent Abida Sultana. However, he said that the situation in the entire area was tense due to the brutal incident.
Yesterday, a man named Tohidunnabi claimed to be the deceased’s brother. He said his home is in Rangpur. They were shocked to hear that their brother had been beaten to death and burned.
