Ordinary students at Jagannath University (JU) have organized a human chain and protest procession demanding the rescue of all the vacated corridors of the university, including the ‘Tibet Room’ occupied by Dhaka-6 MP Haji Selim.

On Thursday (October 29) at 4:30 pm, they protested in front of the main gate of the campus with several posters in their hands.

Speakers on the Human Network said the Interior Ministry closed the corridors in 1985 during the anti-authoritarian movement. Later, local influencers and police officers filled the halls. The Tibet Hall in Soarighat was occupied by Haji Selim, a member of parliament for the Dhaka-6 constituency.

They said that after the student movement in 2009, 2011 and 2014, some rooms were left under the administration of the university. But the remaining corridors dislodged were not recovered despite the guarantees of the upper house of the government. The commission formed by the government to rescue the hall gave a report but did not see the light. Although land grabbers are suing the government for ownership of some corridors, those cases are still in the background. As a result, influential people have occupied the halls of the non-residential university and sold them as shopping malls.

At that time, the ordinary students demanded the government and the university administration to rescue the vacated room. They warned of a strong movement if the government and university administration did not take action to rescue the room.

It can be mentioned that after the RAB raided the home of Dhaka Seli MP Haji Selim last Monday, the topic of his busy Tibet Hall came up again on various university Facebook groups. Later, the students called for a rescue movement in the cleared hallway.
