A young man was reportedly beaten to death and then burned to death in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat. The incident took place in the Burimari land port area (bamboo mill) on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway around 7pm on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Nabi Jewel, 42. His home is in the Shalban Mistripara area of Rangpur city. He is the son of Abdul Wazed Miah. It is known that he was once working in the public cantonment school in Rangpur.
However, no one has been able to say exactly why the young man was beaten and burned to death. Although some locals accuse him of hurting religious feelings.
At 10:30 pm, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Abu Jafar and members of the administration and law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene. The deputy commissioner later told the media: ‘It is not yet known what caused the murder. An investigation committee will be formed. Then it can be said accurately.
However, due to the deployment of a large number of law enforcement officers in the area and the active efforts of the administration, the situation is calm at this time, the deputy commissioner said.
Sumon Kumar Mohant, Police Officer in Charge (CO) of Patgram, confirmed the incident, saying: “Another person was injured in the incident. However, due to the excited crowd, we have not yet been able to enter the scene.

Some locals claim that the young man arrived on a motorcycle after Asr prayers this afternoon and entered the Burimari Jame mosque. There he insulted the Koran. However, no one could say how the young man insulted the Qur’an.
As soon as the news spread outside, people started gathering there. The man was taken to the Burimari Union Parishad office to save him from the mafia. But after a while, thousands of people gathered there. At one point, the agitated crowd began to drag and beat the young man who was being held at the Union Parishad. At one point, the man’s body was set ablaze and burned to death in the area of the BGB (bamboo mill) checkpoint. His motorcycle was also set on fire at the time.
Patgram Upazila Parishad President Ruhul Amin Babul, Upazila Nirbahi (UN) Officer Kamrun Nahar and Officer-in-Charge (CO) of Patgram Sumon Police Station Kumar Mohant arrived at the scene. They tried to calm the agitated crowd but failed. At one point they were trapped there too.
Meanwhile, a man named Abbas (51) from Sultan Jobayer in the Munsipara area of Rangpur city has been admitted to the Patgram Upazila Health Complex. Another injured young man, Sharif (22), was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Sultan Jobayer Abbas, who is in treatment, claimed to be the author of the document and told the media at the hospital tonight that he came to meet one of his clients and was beaten by the agitated crowd in Burimari. The deceased has no identity with him.
A doctor from the emergency department of the Patgram Upazila Health Complex said tonight that two injured were taken to hospital. Among them, seriously injured Sharif was sent to Rangpur.
As a result of this incident, traffic on the highway was stopped in the Banshkal area. Additional police have been deployed there. However, the agitated police were unable to get them out.
