The two separate incidents took place on Thursday morning, the day of the attack in the French city of Nice.

Hours after the attack on the church in the city of Nice, police shot dead a gunman in an area of the southern city of Avenue. The man shouted “Allahu Akbar” and tried to attack pedestrians and the police with a weapon.

In other news, a man was arrested after stabbing a guard at the French consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, state television reported. The guard, who was stabbed, was taken to hospital. However, the French embassy said his condition was not critical.

The mayor of the French city of Nice, Christian Estuis, described the knife attack on the church as a “terrorist” attack. He said on Twitter that the knife attack took place in or near the Natar-Dam church in the city. Police arrested the attacker.

The attacker decapitated a woman with a knife, police said. The mayor said the attacker was shouting “Allahu Akbar”. Even after his arrest, he was shouting “Allahu Akbar”. One of the dead within the church is believed to be the church director.

“The police shot the alleged attacker with a knife during his detention. He is alive and they are taking him to the hospital,” Mayor Esthuji told reporters.

“It’s been a long time,” he said. It is time for France to withdraw from the peace process to eradicate Islamofascism from our region.

He said the nature of the incident coincided with the killing of a teacher in broad daylight in a Paris suburb earlier this month.

Police said three people were killed and several more injured in the attack. The French counterterrorism prosecutor’s office said it had been instructed to investigate the attack.

A Reuters reporter at the scene said police with automatic weapons had installed a security cordon around the church.

Earlier on October 17, 46-year-old schoolmaster Samuel Petty was beheaded in a Paris suburb. Before the incident occurred, there was another stabbing in the country.

The teacher displayed a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the classroom, according to French media reports. French President Emmanuel Macron issued a statement in support of the cartoon after Petty’s assassination.

Macron’s comments were condemned by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and by several Muslim-majority countries, including Saudi Arabia.

In recent days the differences between the opinions of Muslim majority countries and those of European countries have become apparent.
