The United Nations has expressed concern over the publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the French magazine Shirley Ebdo. The High Representative of the agency for the Alliance of Civilizations issued a statement on Wednesday (October 27). He said that a culture of mutual respect, brotherhood and peace must be built for all religions and beliefs.

Ángel Moratinos, an official with the High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations, said that exposing satirical images could generate tension and intolerance. The UN is monitoring the situation with deep concern. Through cartoons the emotions, feelings, religion, beliefs or ethnicity of the common man have been attacked.

He said that freedom of expression should be exercised in such a way that no religion is disrespected. We should all have full respect for religion.

On October 17, a young man killed teacher Samuel Patty in the streets of Paris saying “Allahu Akbar”. Because, that teacher showed the cartoon of the Prophet in class and explained freedom of expression. Abdulakh, the young man who assaulted the teacher, was shot and killed by the police on the spot.

“The Islamists want to take the future away from us, but France will not stop showing cartoons,” French President Emmanuel Macron said after the teacher’s assassination. In reaction to the French President’s comments, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Macron needed psychiatric treatment.
