The Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Deputy Assistant Inspector (ASI) Raihanul Islam in connection with the gang rape of a ninth grade student in Rangpur. He was arrested at the Metropolitan Police lines around 9:30 pm on Wednesday and taken to the city’s PBI office. Previously, Raihan was under police surveillance for two days.
Meanwhile, the two defendants arrested in the gang rape case have given confessional statements under section 164 in court. Yesterday afternoon they testified before the superior judicial judge Jahangir Alam. Previously, the schoolgirl’s statement under Section 22 was recorded in the same court and the student identified the defendant and gave details of the incident to the court.
PBI arrested Babul Hossain, 38, and Abul Kalam Azad, 40, from the East Majapara area of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila on Tuesday morning on charges of being involved in gang-raping a schoolgirl.
According to the police and local sources, ASI Raihanul Islam of the DB Police had a love affair with a ninth-grade student at Mainakuthi Kachutari in Rangpur. On October 23, ASI Raihanul took the girl to a rented house owned by Sumaiya Akhter Meghla aka Alayar in the Kaderpool area and raped her. On October 25, Raihan took the schoolgirl home. There, with the help of Meghla and her accomplice Survi Akhter, he raped two female students named Babul Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad. The matter came to light when the student fell ill. Later, around 8:30 pm, the police rescued him from the house and took him to the police station. Later, the police arrested Meghla. Later that night, another accomplice, Survi, was also arrested. Detainees Meghla and Survi were sent to jail Tuesday night for failing to give confessional statements in court.
Meanwhile, Babul and Azad confessed to the rape in court on Wednesday afternoon. The girl’s father became the plaintiff in the incident, mentioning the names of two people, including police officer Raihanul Islam, and filed a rape case against some unidentified people at the Haragachh police station.
On the other hand, the police admitted the sick student to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The case was handed over to PBI in Rangpur from the Haragachh Police Station on Monday.
PBI Police Superintendent ABM Zakir Hossain said the two defendants had confessed to the incident in court. They were later sent to jail.
When asked if Raihan had been arrested, the police superintendent said that he was arrested overnight after completing all procedures, as ASI Raihan’s involvement in the rape case was confirmed in the defendant’s initial confession and the statement given in court.
On the other hand, freedom fighters and human rights activists yesterday delivered a memorandum to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner under the banner of civil society demanding the arrest and punishment of Raihan. Earlier on Tuesday, various left-wing groups demonstrated in the city demanding the same.
