Internet speeds in the country could be a few days lower than midnight on Thursday. This could be a problem for the maintenance of a submarine cable in India, the sources said.
Bharti Airtel Limited’s Global Service Management Center informed its Bangladeshi subsidiary in an email yesterday that the internet service outage will occur when the replacement and maintenance of its ITUI submarine cable begins. Maintenance work was scheduled to begin on October 30 and continue through November 2.
Bharti Airtel Limited further said that the hours may change depending on the progress of work and weather conditions. Previously, it was reported on October 26 that the works are scheduled to begin on October 28.
Industry experts say Internet users in some areas can receive four days of slow service for the maintenance of a submarine cable connecting Singapore to Chennai.
Moshiur Rahman, Managing Director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL), told Kaler Kanth on Wednesday night: “We have no problem with our two submarine cables. The problem may lie with International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) operators importing bandwidth from India.
In response to a question, the managing director of BSCCL further said: “The current demand for Internet bandwidth in the country is two thousand Gbps (gigabytes per second). From this, they take 1,265 Gbps from us. The rest comes from India through ITC operators.
Moshiur Rahman, head of trade for Fiber at Home Global Limited, an international Internet gateway or operator of IIG and International Terrestrial Cable (ITC), said that the country’s ITC operators transport the Internet bandwidth supply from its submarine cables from Chennai and Mumbai in India. This bandwidth reaches the country through the Benapole border. This can be a problem for those ITCs that carry the bandwidth of Chennai’s ‘i2i’ submarine cable. This is because repair work on the ‘Itui’ submarine cable link on the Chennai route to Singapore will continue from October 30 to November 2. Although there are no problems with the two submarine cables in Bangladesh, the country’s customers may still have some problems with internet speed during these four days. Because ITC operators share internet bandwidth from Chennai.
