A 20-year-old housewife was reportedly raped overnight in a minibus in Boda upazila in Panchagarh. Police arrested four defendants in the incident.
When they were presented in court in Panchagarh on Wednesday afternoon, the court ordered that they be sent to jail.
Boda Police Inspector (Investigation) Abu Sayem Mia confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.
The victim, a housewife, abducted four people at the Boda police station on Tuesday night and filed a rape complaint, the police official said.
According to the case brief, the defendant Jahidul Islam alias Ratan met with a resident of a Maidandighi village of Boda upazila on his mobile phone. From time to time they exchanged words and text messages. The housewife had a fight with her husband on Monday afternoon. On this occasion, Jahidul assured her that he would marry and asked her to go to the Maidanaghi market. When the victim arrived there at night, Jahidul took him to Boda Bazar and then to the Panchagarh train station and told him that he would go to Kazi’s office. The housewife had dinner in the evening with Jahidul Islam, autorickshaw drivers Amirul Islam and Nur Alam at a restaurant in the area of the train station. After eating, Jahidul asked Shahidul Islam to bring a minibus on his mobile phone. He was later taken by minibus to Maladam Bazar in Sadar upazila. Later in the evening, the minibus pulled up to the side of the Maitri gas station in the city of Panchagarh. The housewife was beaten inside the minibus and Jahidul and the minibus driver Shahidul raped her during the night. Later on Tuesday morning, Jahidul took the housewife around the Boda bus stop area on a motorcycle and left. Later, members of her family rescued the housewife and took her home.
Immediately after the case, the police arrested Jahidul Islam at his home and, according to the information provided by him, three others were also arrested. Subsequently, the police confiscated the minibus used at the CNDB crossing in the city of Panchagarh.
The four detainees are Jahidul Islam alias Ratan (25), Amirul Islam (30), the minibus driver Shahidul Islam (28) and Nur Alam (24).
The investigating officer of the case and inspector (investigation) of the Boda police station, Abu Sayem Mia, said: “The victim brought a case against the housewife for kidnapping and rape under the 2020 Amendment Ordinance of the Law of Prevention of Violence against Women and Children. The victim’s health examination was completed.
