The University Scholarship Commission (UGC) has allowed a limited number of students in the last semester of private universities to take practical classes and physical exams. The decision was made in a virtual meeting of the UGC on Tuesday afternoon.
However, the meeting decided to take this class by maintaining a six foot distance between the two students following strict health guidelines.
A UGC member told The Daily Star: “A maximum of 10 students will be allowed to participate in practical classes and exams and only one class will be held per day.”
The president, members and senior officials of the UGC were present at the virtual meeting.
Professor Kazi Shahidullah, president of the UGC, told The Daily Star: “It has been decided to allow students in the last semester of undergraduate or graduate classes to participate in practical classes and exams in person.”
He said that some private universities had requested the need to take practical classes and exams for their graduate students to pass. This decision has been made in context.
‘We are not going to reopen the universities. We are only giving them the opportunity to participate in classes and exams in special circumstances, ”he added.
Professor Shahidullah said that the universities would bear all the responsibilities of the students.
Professor Muhammad Alamgir, a member of UGC, said: “Students in the last semester do not get graduation certificates due to the lack of practical classes and exams. That is why the matter is being considered.
The UGC said in a directive last May that students at private universities could be assessed through online oral exams and virtual presentations after 60 percent of students in the last semester had completed classes and taken classes online to theoretical courses.
According to the UGC, student attendance, assignment, presentation, and midterm test results can be considered prior to the online exam. When creating the results of the last semester, the results of the previous semester can also be taken into account.
However, he says that all practical courses must be completed in the classroom once the situation is normal.
