A local tea merchant named Neshar Uddin (45) beat Abdul Quader, president of Madati Union Parishad (UP) in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat. The incident took place in arbitration at the Union Parishad on Wednesday afternoon.
Police arrested Neshar, son of Chakmal Hossain from the union’s Babudanga area.
According to the police and the locals, there has been a long-standing dispute with Nesar Uddin over his brother Yakub Ali’s land. Yakub Ali Madati complained to Union Parishad about the incident. Later, UP President Abdul Quader settled the matter at a cost of Tk 120,000.
On Tuesday, the money was supposed to be delivered to Nesar through the president, but he did not deliver it. After that, during another arbitration on Wednesday, Nesar Uddin killed and beat President Abdul Quader. He was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex where he was injured.
Upon receiving the news, Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer Rabiul Hasan and the police rushed to the scene and took control of the situation. The UN said: “You cannot accept such an attack on the president for a trivial incident. Of course, legal action will be taken after the investigation.
