Workers at a sweater factory in the Naojor area of Gazipur City Corporation have expressed their discontent. The protesting workers vandalized the factory Wednesday morning. Later they blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Another factory was smashed, several car windows were smashed and bricks were thrown. Ten people, including workers and pedestrians, were injured.
According to factory workers and police sources, there have been a number of recent layoffs among workers for the installation of state-of-the-art jacker machines at the Diganta sweater factory in the Naojor area. Given this, the workers have been protesting for several days demanding an end to the layoffs. The owner agreed to the workers’ demands in the presence of police on Tuesday. But this morning when the workers went to work in the factory, they saw the lights of the machines in different departments and the machines were vandalized. Later, they got mad and trashed the factory and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway around 8am. At one point, workers pulled out a protest procession and trashed the nearby ‘Coast to Coast’ factory. At least 10 vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars and pickup trucks, were vandalized.
