Six of the 14 minors charged in the Barguna Rifat Sharif murder case have been sentenced to 10 years in prison, four to five years, one to three years and the remaining three to life imprisonment. Golam Mostafa Quader, a lawyer in the case, said the court had made several observations in its review of the verdict, citing the need to increase the punishment of juvenile offenders to reduce juvenile delinquency in the country. He said the court’s observation was that the teenagers had gone astray due to a lack of family, moral and basic education. Without its exemplary punishment, the number of juvenile delinquency in the country will increase. On January 8, the Barguna Juvenile Court brought charges against 14 minors charged in the Rifat murder case. Testimony against the 14 defendants began on January 13. A total of 84 witnesses have testified in the case.

Rifat Sharif was shot dead by a ‘Bond Bahini’ gang in front of Barguna Government College on the morning of June 26 last year. Rifat Sharif died at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital that afternoon while undergoing treatment.
