A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Taka 100,000 by a Dhaka court for raping a teenage domestic worker. Judge Roknuzzaman of Rangpur Women’s and Child Abuse Suppression Court 2 delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
The verdict was announced 13 years after the incident. Naya Mia was not present in court at the time. Naya Mia, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, lives in the Fakiran area of Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur.
According to the details of the case and judicial sources, a teenage domestic worker worked as a domestic worker in Naya Mia’s home. On April 14, 2008, Naya Mia found the girl alone at home and raped her. The matter came to light when the girl became pregnant. On October 21 of that year, the girl filed a case with the Pirgachha Police Station under the Law on Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children. Naya Mia was accused of this.
Jahangir Hossain, Public Prosecutor (PP) of Court 2 for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children, the state attorney in the case, said that the defendants had appeared in court for some time while on bail. However, he escaped the day the verdict was announced. The judge delivered the verdict in his absence.
