The French Foreign Ministry on Tuesday advised French citizens living in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iraq and Mauritania to be vigilant.
They have also been ordered to refrain from protesting and rallying against the caricatures of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The guidelines urge French citizens to be especially vigilant when traveling and at tourist and expat gatherings.
The French embassy in Turkey has issued a similar warning to citizens living in the country.
The Muslim world has been outraged by the projection of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and has been harshly criticized by France. There have also been calls for a boycott of French products.
In France, a history teacher named Samuel Patty shows a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while teaching freedom of speech in class. As a result, on October 16, a man of Chechen descent attacked the teacher with a knife and beheaded him. Chechnya is a Muslim country.
This incident caused quite a stir in France. Many French reacted angrily. The country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, condemned the killings and vowed to defend French secular values and fight against Islamic fundamentalism. Turkey did not like Macron’s statement.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Macron’s “mental health must be reviewed.” As a result of the tension between the two countries, France withdrew its ambassador to Turkey.
In response, Erdogan called on the Turks to boycott French products.
After Erdogan, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan also harshly criticized Macron, saying that Macron was “attacking Islam” by encouraging the display of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Iran has also reacted angrily to the incident.
Saudi Arabia has criticized the cartoon drawing of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Although they are not in favor of calling for a boycott of French products.
Meanwhile, the French Interior Ministry said on Tuesday that Turkey and Pakistan should not worry about France’s internal affairs.
