In Magura, it has been alleged that a heretical husband turned his wife over to a moneylender after failing to pay interest. Later, the creditor Ismail forcibly converted the housewife and married her.
After that, he was mentally and physically tortured. At one point, the housewife ran away from her usurer husband’s house to escape torture and divorced him. Even then, the man does not leave the woman behind. The woman was forced to go to the district legal aid officer to resolve the matter.
However, the first husband says that he did not voluntarily hand over his wife to the creditor. On the contrary, the creditor took his wife by force as he was unable to pay the required interest.
Meanwhile, the defendant Ismail said that the woman had voluntarily married him. The District Legal Aid Officer is attempting to resolve this complex issue with the consent of both parties.
However, the district’s legal aid officer declined to comment on the matter as the settlement was ongoing.
Meanwhile, says the head of the district women’s council, the issue is unimaginable in today’s age. They will help her from the side of that defenseless woman.
The victim, from the village of Monirampur in Sadar upazila, said she married Sujoy Biswas, a liquor merchant from the village of Rajapur in neighboring Mohammadpur upazila six years ago. A year after the marriage, a daughter was born to them. Despite minor tensions, they were living a good family life with their children and their husband.
A couple of years ago, she suddenly learned that her husband had borrowed money at Ismail Mandal’s interest in the same area. According to Ismail’s claim, the interest amount is 9 lakh rupees. Ismail is pressuring her husband to pay in various ways.
Although she paid the principal, her husband did not pay the interest. At one point, Ismail asked his wife to hand it over if he couldn’t pay. Under pressure from Ismail, she took her husband Jessore and handed him over to Ismail.
After converting her to Islam, Ismail married her and first kept her in a house in Dhaka and lived as husband and wife. A couple of months later, Ismail took him to his village house in Magura. From then on, Ismail and his first wife and son began to torture the woman in various ways, mentally and physically.
Unable to bear her torture, she fled about five months ago and divorced Ismail two months ago. She currently works as a nurse in a clinic at a women’s shelter in Magura.
However, even after the divorce, Ismail does not leave her behind. He arrived at his workplace with the phone and showed fear in various ways. In this situation, he has approached the district legal aid office to resolve the matter and get rid of Ismail.
The woman’s first husband, Sujoy Biswas, claimed that he had paid the money he had taken from Ismail. Even then, Ismail demanded 9 lakh rupees in interest. When he went to see the doctor for not paying the required money, Ismail beat up Jessore and forcibly took his wife away.
However, the defendant Ismail said that all the accusations against him were false. It does not exchange interests. He did not marry the woman by force. She voluntarily converted and married him. Now he wants to get his wife back.
Advocate Shahina Akhter Daily, a female District Legal Aid leader, said that no woman can claim as husband and wife if she is legally divorced. Also, it takes effect within 90 days after the divorce. If a man continues to harass or intimidate his ex-wife even after the divorce, it will be considered a felony.
Mamtaz Begum, president of the district women’s council, said it was unimaginable that a woman was being treated unfairly at this time because of her interest. Women are not a commodity or an asset that can be transferred for money. The women’s council will provide assistance to the defenseless woman. If the woman wants, the guilty will be brought to justice.
The district’s police superintendent, Khan Muhammad Rezwan, said the woman had not filed a complaint with the police. The police officer also confirmed that the police would take legal action if he complained.
