In Mohammadpur upazila of Magura, a husband has been accused of turning his wife over to a moneylender after failing to pay interest. The lender then forcibly converted the victim and married her.
The victim is known to have married Sujoy Biswas, a betel trader from Rajapur village in Mohammadpur upazila district eight years ago. A year later they have a daughter. However, in 2016, after not paying the interest, her husband Sujoy handed her over to Ismail Mandal in the same area, the woman alleged.
He then divorced Ismail on August 31 and took refuge with a woman in Magura. The victim also works as a nurse in a clinic. However, Ismail did not leave her behind and the woman became the subject of the District Legal Aid Officer for resolution.
District Legal Aid attorney Shahina Akhter said: “No woman can claim as husband and wife if she is legally divorced. Also, within 90 days after the divorce, it goes into effect. “Even after a divorce, if a man harasses or intimidates his ex-wife, it will be considered a serious crime,” he added.
The details of the incident came to light in the statement of the alleged victim from the village of Monirampur de Sadar upazila. She said she married Sujoy Biswas, a betel merchant from the village of Rajapur in neighboring Mohammadpur upazila, eight years ago. A year after the marriage, a daughter was born to them. Despite minor setbacks, they were living a good life with their children and husbands. A couple of years ago, she suddenly learned that her husband had borrowed money at Ismail Mandal’s interest in the same area.
According to Ismail’s claim, the interest is actually 9 lakh rupees. Ismail pressured her husband to pay the money in various ways. Although the principal was paid, her husband did not pay the claimed interest. At one point, Ismail asked his wife to hand it over if he couldn’t pay. Under pressure, the woman’s husband brought her to Jessore and handed her over to Ismail. After converting to Islam, Ismail married her and kept her in a house in Dhaka as husband and wife. Ismail later took him to his village house in Magura.
Since then, Ismail, his first wife and their son have been torturing the victim in various ways, both mentally and physically. Unable to bear his torture, he fled about five months ago. He divorced Ismail on August 31. However, even after the divorce, Ismail does not leave her behind, alleging that the phone calls have intimidated her. Faced with this situation, he went to the District Legal Assistance Office to resolve the matter. This woman’s wish is to get rid of all the garbage behind her and go back to living alone.
The woman’s first husband, Sujoy, has denied responsibility for turning his wife over to others. He said: ‘I have paid the money I took from Ismail. Even then Ismail demanded nine lakh rupees in my interest. If he can’t pay, he asks his wife to hand it over. When I went to see a doctor in Jessore, Ismail beat me and took my wife by force.
Meanwhile, Ismail Mandal claims that all the accusations against him are false. It does not deal with interest. He did not even marry by force. Ismael’s comment, “She willingly converted and married me.” He also said that he wants to get his wife back now.
In this regard, the president of the district council of women Mamtaz Begum said: ‘It is unimaginable that a woman has been oppressed by interests. Women are not a commodity or an asset that can be transferred for money ”. The women’s council will help the defenseless woman, she said, adding: “If the woman wants, the guilty will be brought to justice.”
Magura Police Superintendent Khan Muhammad Rezwan said: “The woman did not file a complaint with the police. If she complains, the police will take legal action.
However, the district legal aid officer expressed his inability to comment on the matter as negotiations between the woman and Ismail were ongoing.
