Macron vowed to uphold French secular values and fight radical Islam. That is why Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he needs a “mental health check.”
After a nationwide protest over the assassination of a teacher in France for showing a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a class, Macron spoke out strongly against the country’s secular values as opposed to radical Islam.
“France will not stop satirical cartoons,” Macron said earlier this week. Undermining the freedom of expression of the people of a certain community means, in his words, undermining the unity of the country.
Macron has even called Islam a “critical” religion around the world. He also called for stricter control of foreign aid to mosques.
In a speech in the Turkish city of Kayseri, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “What is Macron’s problem with Muslims and Islam? He needs psychiatric treatment.”
“What about the head of a country who does not understand freedom of religion and treats millions of people of different beliefs in his country? “
In response to Erdogan’s comments, France called its ambassador to Turkey for talks, a Macron official said.
“President Erdogan’s comments are unacceptable,” he said. Exaggeration and rudeness cannot be a form. We want Erdogan to change his policy, because he is dangerous everywhere. “
Erdogan is a devout Muslim. He has been trying to bring Islam into the mainstream of Turkish politics since his Islam-based AK Party came to power in 2002.
