A suicide bomber has killed at least 16 people outside an educational institution in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Another 58 people were injured. The injured have been admitted to hospital.
The incident took place in front of a private institution of higher education on Saturday night (October 24), the country’s Interior Ministry said. Hundreds of Shiite students live in the building in the Barchi area of Dast.
The BBC reports that many of the injured have been taken to hospital. It is feared that the death toll could rise further. The Taliban have denied responsibility for the attack.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Tariq Aryan, told AFP in a statement that a suicide bomber had tried to enter the building. However, after security guards identified him as the attacker, the man detonated the bomb there.
The recent series of counterattacks between Afghan government forces and the Afghan Taliban, who have long carried out armed attacks to seize power in the country, has grown at an alarming rate.
