According to PBI, Raihan was detained at the Bandarbazar outpost at the Kotwali Police Station around 3 pm on 10 October and tortured. Raihan died of torture. His wife Tahmina Akhter filed a case under the Custodial Death (Prevention) Act the next day. The name of the accused is not mentioned in the case. After the case, an investigative committee of the metropolitan police investigated the outpost in charge of SI Akbar Hossain Bhunya and four others were suspended and three were removed. Aaron was among them. Akbar has been on the run since October 13.
PBI sources further said that after the police handed over the investigation of the case to PBI, Raihan’s body was removed from the grave and an autopsy was performed again. SI Hasan Uddin, who holds the outpost’s ‘Two-IC’ position, was suspended on October 21 on charges of helping SI Akbar escape, including concealing video from the outpost’s closed-circuit camera to cover up the torture incident.
Rayhan worked at a diagnostic center in the city. He was survived by his wife, a two-and-a-half-month-old daughter and a Niharipara resident in Akhalia. In the wake of his death in police custody, a united front of the locals called ‘Greater Akhalia Sangram Parishad’ has been protesting in the camp. Sangram Parishad will carry out a human chain at Medina Market Point near Akhalia in the afternoon demanding the arrest of all those involved, including fugitive SI Akbar, the main perpetrator of torture.
