Dhaka: Although the government has fixed the price twice to reduce instability in the potato market, the fixed price is not yet effective in the market. Vendors sell potatoes at 45 Tk per kg instead of the 35 Tk set by the government.
Retailers say that wholesalers are still selling potatoes at Rs 35/36 / kg. How can potatoes be sold for 35 rupees at retail? The cost per kg is another five rupees.
On the other hand, the shopkeepers say the government is not taking potatoes out of the cold room at a fixed price. If we get potatoes from there at a fixed price, we can also distribute them at a lower price.
On Friday (October 24), the potatoes will be sold at 45 Tk per kg in the capital’s Shantinagar, Segundobagicha, Fakirapul, Motijheel T&T Colony Bazar, Khilgaon Bazar, Malibagh, Malibagh Railgate, Rampura and Magbazar retail markets.
Although potatoes are not sold at the price set by the government in the retail market, the price has dropped by 5 rupees per kg in one week. The previous week, potatoes were selling at 50 Tk / kg in the retail market, but now they are sold at 45 Tk / kg.
And in the Karwan Bazar wholesale yard, potatoes are sold for Rs 35-36 / kg.
Retailers blame warehouse managers for the price of potatoes. The warehouse traders say they sell the merchandise on commission, at the price that will be kept in the cold room.
Ahmed Ali, a retailer from Malibagh Bazar, said that the price of potatoes in the wholesale market remained at 36-38 rupees. It costs an extra five rupees to bring a kilogram of potatoes from the wholesale market to the retail market. How can we sell it for 35 rupees? If the price goes down on the wholesale market, the price will go down here.
“We sell potatoes on commission,” said Afzal, a warehouse trader in Karwan Bazar. We do not participate in the increase in the price of potatoes, we will sell them at the price we get.
On October 14, the Department of Agricultural Marketing had written to Deputy Commissioners across the country to ensure that the price of potatoes is 23 taka per kg in cold storage, 25 taka in wholesale and 30 tare per kg in the retail market. As the price was not reflected in the market, the price was rescheduled on Tuesday (October 20). The increased price is Rs 28 for cold storage, Rs 30 for wholesale and Rs 35 for retail.
