Despite the ban, the Hilsa mother is sold in the remote Shibchar upazila pastures of Madaripur. Men and women from all over flock to Padmapara to buy oversized hilsa for less. It’s like a hilsa market!
Fishermen are known to be selling hilsa secretly caught in the Padma River. The Hilsa, which weighs between one and a kilo and a half, sells for only 400-500 Tk. Also, a small size of hilsa is available at a very high water price. These yarns are sold together on the banks of the river in one hali and two hali.
According to a local source, unscrupulous fishermen on the last edge of the Charjanajat Union of the Upazila sell hilsa caught from different places on the Padma River. Numerous people from all over, including Shivchar, come to remote areas of char to buy cheap hilsa. Many people come to buy fish by walking from the vast char area with trawlers.
According to locals, the administration’s campaign to preserve the hilsa since last season is striking. This time the activities of the administration are also being noticed. The police arrest fishermen every day. Even then, some are secretly fishing. A class of buyers is reaching out to remote coal areas to buy it.
According to the District Fisheries Office, the government prohibited the capture of hilsa from October 14 to November 4. The administration is conducting regular campaigns in the district’s hat bazaars, including the Padma River, with the aim of conserving the hilsa. In the past six days, a mobile court arrested 69 fishermen in a raid in the Shibchar section of the Padma River for fishing hilsa.
A 72 thousand meter lakh of net has been destroyed. The estimated value is 41 lakh 75 lakhs. At this time, a fine of one lakh of 49 lakhs has been charged. 140 pieces of hilsa have been seized.
The district fisheries officer, Ripon Kanti Ghosh, said: “Our operation is running regularly.” However, administration officials were busy with the by-elections in Shibchar Upazila on Tuesday. An operation was not possible in Shibchar on Tuesday. Some unscrupulous fishermen are secretly selling hilsa. However, we continue our efforts to preserve the hilsa.
