The Minister of Railways, Nurul Islam Sujan, has said that there are plans to run a train from Dhaka to Siliguri on March 26 next year. He made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the newly appointed High Commissioner of India in Dhaka Vikram Doraisami at his office in Railway Bhawan on Wednesday.
During the meeting, various issues related to the railways of both countries were discussed, including the ongoing Bangladesh Railway project with Indian funding. At the beginning of the discussion, the inauguration of the new Chilahati-Haldibari line and the operation of the train were discussed.
The Minister of Railways informed the High Commissioner that on the occasion of Victory Day in December, the Prime Ministers of both countries would inaugurate the new communication between countries and the freight train would work at the beginning.
The Minister of Railways said that works on the Bangabandhu railway bridge would start next month. If this bridge is built, the country’s rail communication system will be greatly improved. In addition, the process of converting the meter gauge line to double gauge is underway. At present, many projects have been undertaken in the railway field. With the launch of the Padma Bridge rail link project, Indian trains will be able to transport goods and passengers from Benapole in Jessore to Dhaka easily and in less time.
Also, the construction of a container terminal depot in Sirajganj was discussed and it was reported that if this ICD is built, the transportation of goods will be very easy. The construction of a new coach factory in Syedpur was also discussed.
At that time, said the Minister of Railways, an Indian-style consultancy section will be established at Bangladesh Railway. The Indian High Commissioner also expressed interest in developing catering services and training academies at Bangladesh Railway.
