Dhaka: Traders do not sell potatoes at the price set by the government. Retailers blame wholesalers and wholesalers blame cold store owners for the price.
But it’s the ordinary shoppers who suffer. They are angry that the price has not come down even after the government announcement.
On Wednesday (October 21), Mirpur Retail Market No. 13 and Mirpur Wholesale Market No. 1 were visited in the capital. At the wholesale level, potatoes are sold at 38-39 taka instead of the established 30 taka by the government.
Mirpur Raw Bazaar No. 13 is visited, most of the stores have less supply of potatoes. Potatoes are sold for Rs 45 to Rs 50 per kg in this market.
Mirpur resident Yunus Mia told banglanews that the supply of potatoes in the market is low. I bought potatoes for 47 rupees. Nobody here sells potatoes at the price set by the government.
Mirpur No. 13 retailers blamed wholesalers for the high price of potatoes and said: “We buy more to sell more.” On top of that, there are deficits, there are travel costs.
Mirpur Wholesale Market No. 1 has been visited and potatoes are found to be sold at a wholesale price of Taka 35-39 per kg. At the retail level, if you buy at least one palla (5 kg) of potatoes, the price remains at 44 Tk.
Mirpur’s number one wholesalers blame cold store owners for selling potatoes at higher prices. They say, how can we sell less if the owners of the cold rooms do not give potatoes at lower prices? Traders claim that cold stores keep the price of potatoes at 32/33 Tk.
The government has set the price of potatoes at 28 Tk per kg at the cold storage level.
These traders demanded the operation of moving tracks in cold rooms before the wholesale and retail markets. They also complained that the cold store owners were organizing and supplying fewer potatoes to the market.
Mohammad Imam Hossain, owner of the Sonar Bangla Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told banglanews that to reduce the price of potatoes, you have to start first. Mobile pitches must work in cold rooms.
Abdul Matin of the Matin Chamber of Commerce and Kabir Hossain of Piyas Traders said mobile stores in the retail and wholesale markets, as well as cold rooms, should be raided to capture the big unions. If cold rooms keep the price of potatoes high or if they are not supplied despite having potato stocks, the potatoes must be recovered and sold at auction.
Retail buyer Abdur Rahman said the price of potatoes is higher on the market even after the government has set the price. It is very sad.
He demanded that, in addition to taking action against unscrupulous traders, the government should also take strict measures to enforce the price set in the market.
