Dhaka: The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling potatoes at Tk 25 / kg by truck in Dhaka city to control the price of potatoes. Long lines of people have been seen at TCB truck stops to buy potatoes since the morning.

On Wednesday (October 21), several areas of the capital were visited, including farms, and a long line of low-income people arrived to buy potatoes starting at 10 a.m.

Ignoring the hot sun, many people queued for an hour. When the TCB truck stopped at the designated location at 11 am, the overflowing crowd was noticeable. There were no hygiene problems due to queuing.

In this regard, TCB trader Rafiqul Islam told banglanews: “We have been selling TCB products on the farm since 11 am.” I give two kg of potatoes to each buyer at the rate of 25 rupees. A buyer can buy all other TCB products, including onion.

“After a while, we urge buyers to adhere to hygiene rules,” he added. Even then, due to the large crowd, there are some changes to the hygiene rules.

A press release from the Commerce Ministry on Tuesday (October 20) said that the potatoes were selling for Tk 25.

According to a press release, TCB will start selling potatoes at Tk 25 per kg from next Wednesday, following the instructions of Trade Minister Tipu Munshi. TCB will start selling potatoes through trucks in important places in Dhaka city. Potatoes will be sold at Tk 25 / kg at Rs 2 / kg. At the same time, onion, edible oil, sugar and lentils will be sold at fixed prices.

The Department of Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Marketing held an emergency meeting with potato growers, wholesalers and retailers, representatives of cold storage companies and other interested parties on Tuesday afternoon. After the meeting, the Director General of the Department of Agricultural Marketing, Mohammad Yusuf, said that the maximum retail price of potatoes has been set at 35 taka per kg.

He said that the wholesale price was set at Tk 30 and the cold storage at Tk 28. This price will be effective from Wednesday. However, since many people have already bought potatoes at higher prices, the price can vary from place to place. Little by little it will become normal.

Previously, the Agricultural Marketing Department had set the price for potatoes at Rs 30 per kg at retail, Rs 25 at wholesale, and Rs 23 in cold storage.
