Authorities at North South University have decided to cut tuition fees by 20 percent for the upcoming fall semester in response to student protests.
“The university authorities have decided to eliminate tuition and activity fees by 20 percent,” the university’s vice chancellor, Professor Atiqul Islam, told The Daily Star on Tuesday.
The decision was announced during a sit-down program on campus that called for a 30 percent fee waiver for the third day in a row today.
Students demand a full waiver of activity fees, such as computer lab fees, library fees, and other fees. The students made the lawsuit as they did not have access to online classes or access to the on-campus laboratory-library.
The protesters said a university representative announced the fee reduction this afternoon. Yet many students continue to protest demanding a 30% exemption from tuition fees and the complete abolition of student activity fees.
The students took position in front of the university door starting at 1:00 p.m. today. They asked to accept the lawsuit before the start of the new semester on October 22.
Due to the economic damage caused by the epidemic, North South University had previously waived 20 percent of fees in the summer semester.
