Khairul Islam Khabir, 48, a small vegetable trader in Magura’s Mohammadpur upazila, has six coins on the floor of his house. The financial value of which is 60 lakhs. He has been trading vegetables in the Mohammadpur market for 25 years and has collected these coins.
At first he collected these coins as a hobby and for the purpose of saving, but now they are a thorn in his side. The merchant is in dire straits with four anna, eight anna, one taka and five taka coins, as well as outdated five paisa, ten paisa coins worth about 60,000 taka.
Khairul Islam Khabir said that he has been trading vegetables in the Mohammadpur market for about 25 years. Because of that, many people bought her vegetables with different currencies. I used to store these coins in the land bank to store them thinking ahead first. But at present it is in extreme difficulty since the circulation of these coins is not much.
Khabir said that two-quarters of its trading capital is locked in coins. As a result, you have to work hard to have a family of five.
He regretted that although he went to various commercial establishments with the coins, no one wanted to take the huge amount of coins. It goes without saying that currencies are not used in transactions today.
Mofazzal Hossain, Chairman of Mohammadpur Bazar Banik Samiti, said that Khabir has been marketing vegetables in the market for a long time. He has many coins in his possession. He wants to turn them into paper money now. I have also heard that various banks have been contacted on the matter.
The Deputy General Manager (AGM) of Magura Sonali Bank Rashidul Islam said he was not aware of the matter. However, if the entrepreneur contacts the banking authorities, the necessary measures will be taken subject to the permission of the higher authorities.
