Finally, the demands of freedom fighters for almost two decades are to be met. The Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has proposed observing Freedom Fighters’ Day on December 1 of each year. The ministry accepted the proposal of the parliamentary commission. The proposal will be collected in the cabinet.
This initiative was well received by the children of freedom fighters and martyrs. They say that there must be a day to remember and pay tribute to those who gave birth to Bangladesh in exchange for their sacrifices and struggles.
Freedom fighters have long demanded the declaration of December 1 as Freedom Fighters Day. Freedom fighters have been making this demand since 2004. Although government officials agree with the demand, it has been ignored for a decade and a half.
When the BNP-Jamaat alliance came to power in 2001, it gave the ministry to Jamaat leaders accused of war crimes. The freedom fighters reacted angrily when the national flag was decorated on their car. A ‘National Committee for the Implementation of the Demands of Freedom Fighters and the Celebration of Freedom Fighters Day’ was formed under the leadership of the Sector Commanders Forum. They gathered at Paltan Maidan on January 12, 2004 and demanded state recognition of December 1 as Freedom Fighter Day.
Explaining the need for the day, Harun Habib, general secretary of the Sector Commanders Forum, told the Bengali Tribune that the freedom fighters may not be alive in a few days. But if there is a day, a culture of remembering them for centuries will be introduced. That is important to the story. He added that the day has been celebrated by freedom fighters for a long time. We will be grateful if the national enforcement process is completed.
Sangeeta Imam, a cultural activist and organizer from Udichi, told the Bengali Tribune that the announcement of the day was a long-standing demand from the pro-liberation forces. Because many of the heroic freedom fighters leave us because of their age. If there is a day, future generations will remember them throughout the year and their lives will be discussed on this appointed day. On December 16, 1971, we achieved victory with the courage and bravery of these heroic freedom fighters. The day of your memory, the first day of this month, will undoubtedly be significant.
“I am very happy to hear the news,” Touhid Reza Noor, son of the martyr, told the Bengali Tribune. I hope that the official announcement of the status of an important day after all the procedures arrives soon. Bangladesh has been able to take its place on the world map as an independent-sovereign country thanks to the self-sacrifice of millions of martyrs, the test of courage of countless women and the fight to the death of the heroic freedom fighters of this country. The freedom fighters bravely fought against the Pakistani forces equipped with modern weapons. Having a day in the state to remember your invaluable contribution with respect from generation to generation has great meaning for the entire nation.
He further said: ‘The establishment of an independent state through the war of liberation is rare in the world. So I believe that this special day will be taken seriously not only by the people of Bangladesh, but by the whole world. Through this, the story of our hard-won achievements in war will spread across the world. I thank those who have proposed me this day.
Ziad al-Malum, a prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), said it was important to avoid distorting history. Expressing his hope that the day will be announced and observed soon, he told the Bengali Tribune: “Freedom fighters who have fallen under the weight of age are passing away. When I worked with the freedom fighters who were witnesses in the case, I repeatedly thought that after a while the memory of the freedom fighters might cease to exist. When a day is set, some programs are scheduled along with it. Just as the government is providing various facilities, including subsidies to freedom fighters, it also honored them by initiating the process of meeting their demands.
Meanwhile, after the October 18 meeting, the committee chairman. Shahjahan Khan told reporters: “Freedom Fighters Day is still celebrated on December 1 without any official announcement. It should be celebrated at the national level through official declarations. At a time when freedom fighters won’t be there, he has set out to commemorate them so they can be remembered. They hope to get the Prime Minister’s directive and cabinet approval on it.
