According to various media reports, Pakistan is selling the Bhunder and Dingi islands in Sindh to China.
In accordance with the recent Presidential Ordinance and the decision of the Pakistan Islands Development Authority (PIDA), Pakistan has created an agency to develop the arid islands of China with regional waters in the province of Sindh. And that ordinance cannot be challenged in a Pakistani court.
Sindh province in Pakistan is known to be the richest coastal belt in the south-west of the country. Covering an area of 337 km2, it is one of the largest mangrove regions and the seventh largest delta in the world.
There are three hundred islands in the Indus. Bhunder Island is known to the locals as Bundal. Next to it is Dinghy Island. Twin Island is located on 12,000 acres of land.
The central government of Pakistan has always wanted to occupy the Indus coastal region in accordance with the constitution. But the federal government has no right to launch any mega-projects there without the permission of the Sindh government or the people. This is stated in Article 162 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
But the new decision of the central government is not only unconstitutional, but also against international conventions and agreements. This is a violation of human rights. Historically it is an interference in the Sindhi nation and its lands.
Previously, the central government of Pakistan had tried to seize the two islands. Such measures were taken in 2000 and 2006 under Pervez Musharraf. However, the people of Sindh province took strong measures to stop him.
In 2019, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan visited China. There he reached an agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping. One such arrangement is the Diam Bhasha Dam; People in Sindh province have already rejected the project. However, the central government continues to ignore the demands of the population of Sindh province.
That treaty includes Bhunder Island and the Indus Coastal Belt. According to the agreement between Pakistan and China, China wants to build a city like Hong Kong with huge funds on the islands of Bhunder and Dinghy. This agreement is still kept secret.
The people of the Sindh province fear that the island and the coastal belt have been sold to the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese presence in the region is also increasing.
