US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also warned that sanctions will be imposed on countries and individuals who will trade arms with Iran from now on. Pompeo also reacted after the UN arms embargo on Iran was automatically lifted on Sunday (October 16). The US media CNBC and the Iranian news agency Parstude reported this.

Sanctions were lifted in 2015 on the basis of Iran’s nuclear deal with six world powers and UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

“If a person, organization or country sells weapons to Iran or buys weapons from Iran, Washington will impose sanctions on that person, organization or country,” the secretary of state said in a statement in Washington on Sunday. Pompeo also claimed that selling conventional weapons to Iran or buying weapons from Tehran violated UN Security Council resolutions.

“Selling weapons to Iran would increase tensions in the Middle East and leave dangerous weapons in the hands of terrorist groups,” he said.

The UN arms embargo on Iran has been automatically lifted since yesterday. Although the United States recently tried to renew the ban at a meeting of the UN Security Council, most members of the Security Council opposed it.
