The BNP has held a two-day protest demanding the cancellation of the by-elections in the three recently concluded parliamentary seats. The party’s general secretary, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said the vote was rigged by expelling opposition agents from the center, as in the eleventh parliamentary elections. He said: ‘The Electoral Commission (EC) was indifferent. The Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) also lied to no avail, saying that they (the BNP candidates) did not file any complaints. But 162 complaints have been filed from Dhaka.

Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks at a press conference at the BNP president’s political office in Gulshan on Sunday afternoon.

The decision was made at a virtual meeting of the BNP standing committee chaired by the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, at a press conference on Saturday. Furthermore, Mirza Fakhrul condemned the attack on the residence of the late BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam and the BNP district office in Jessore that night. He demanded the arrest of those involved in the attack on the Awami League.

Fakhrul announced a program of protest rallies in metropolitan areas and districts across the country on October 19 and at police stations and upazilas on October 20 to demand the annulment of the by-election results and re-election. He said the EC was being used as a tool to establish a one-party government in the country by deliberately depriving the people of their right to vote. He also commented that the EC was playing the role of ‘submissive player’.

Highlighting incidents of vote manipulation by the ruling party and government administration in the Pabna-4, Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 by-elections, the BNP secretary general said: “They (the ruling party) have stolen the vote by casting false votes “. The EC has declared the Awami League candidates winners by making false results with EVM. We have rejected the result of the election and we demand re-election by canceling the election.

In response to a question from a journalist, Fakhrul said: ‘She (Khaleda Zia) is not free. His sentence has been suspended. If the sentence is suspended, there should be no restrictions for him. To put it bluntly, this is house arrest.

Mirza Fakhrul said that the BNP standing committee meeting had expressed concern about rising prices for staples such as rice, legumes, onions and potatoes and condemned and protested the failure of the government. He said a lack of goodwill and government failure is the reason for the increase in crimes such as rape. Adding the death penalty is not the only solution to prevent rape. He alleged that the rapists were not pleased with the government party or that the rapist was a member of the government party. Police rape rallies also feature people.

When asked about the statement by Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader, Mirza Fakhrul said: “We have not said this yet (intermission). I am not complying with the last election (Eleventh Parliamentary Election), we call it illegal, we are asking to cancel it When I talk about the midterm elections, the party will tell me.

The BNP secretary general said that while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report had said that India’s GDP (gross domestic product) would likely fall by 10 percent, there were many more reasons behind showing Bangladesh’s GDP more high.
