Iran, self-sufficient in defense, does not need to buy weapons

Iran has claimed that it is self-sufficient in defense and does not need to buy weapons. Tehran demanded on Sunday that the UN arms embargo on the country not expire.

A statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry said: “Iran’s defense ideology is based on the people and capabilities of the country. It does not have the urgency to buy conventional weapons, weapons of mass destruction and conventional weapons.”

In 2006, the UN Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Iran. The ban will expire on Sunday.

Russia, China, Germany, Britain, France and the United States have pledged to ease economic sanctions in exchange for stopping Tehran’s uranium enrichment under the 2015 nuclear deal. In 2016, the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal. Since then, tensions between Tehran and Washington have increased.

The United States has been pushing for the UN embargo to be extended. However, the ban was not extended despite opposition.

“Today, Iran’s defense cooperation with the world has returned to normal, a victory for multilateralism, peace and security in our region,” Iranian Foreign Minister Javed Zarif said in a tweet.
