The activities of the madrassa in Comilla are suspended on charges of ‘distortion of the national anthem’

The upazila administration has suspended the activities of the newly opened Dakshin Para Madrasa in the Siddheswari village of Muradnagar in Comilla on charges of “distorting national music”.

A video that went viral on social media showed madrasa students singing a song distorting the melody and lyrics of the national anthem.

Muradnagar Upazila’s executive officer, Abhishek Das, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.

He said: ‘After watching the video, the president and general secretary of the Siddheswari Dakshin Para Jame mosque were called to the upazila office. The madrasa was inaugurated last September on the premises of the Siddheswari Dakshin Para Jame mosque. Who does not have permission, so the Upazila administration has suspended its activities and informed the deputy commissioner.

The Upazila Nirbahi official further said: ‘The teacher who was directly involved in distorting the national anthem was not found in the madrasa. However, he contacted Upazila Nirbahi’s officer by phone and apologized for the mistake. He also said that the video was removed from his account through social media.

Muradnagar Police Station Inspector (Investigative Officer) Nahid Ahmed said: ‘I went to the madrasa facility myself. I have informed the mosque authorities about the decision to close the madrasa. They have also been told to act on his next instructions.

Alim Bhuiyan, Treasurer of the Siddheswari Dakshin Para Jame Mosque Committee in Muradnagar, said: “The madrasa was inaugurated in September. The upazila administration has detained him on charges of distorting the national anthem. However, the normal activities of the mosque will continue.

An attempt was made to contact the accused professor Mohammad Najibullah Afsari on his mobile phone, but no connection was found.
